Plan Your Savannah Trip
Give the walkable city two full days if you can. Add the coast or drive-out sites as a separate block rather than squeezing them between downtown reservations.

Two full city days are a useful first-visit baseline, not a rule. This editorial assumption allows one north-district and riverfront day, then a south-district and museum or Bonaventure day. Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski or Wormsloe adds a separate half-day or day because each requires road travel and its own operating constraints.
Build the schedule in this order
- Fix arrival and departure times, including the airport or parking transfer.
- Choose the hotel area and decide whether a car helps after parking cost is included.
- Reserve capacity-limited house tours, meal cruises, destination dinners and small-group tours.
- Place free squares, Forsyth Park and River Street around those fixed times.
- Check the weather, transit schedule and official operating pages again shortly before the trip.

Airport and downtown transport
The airport lists rental cars adjacent to baggage claim, rideshare pickup north of baggage claim and on-demand taxis. CAT Route 3 links the airport area and downtown as part of the regular bus network; it is not a dedicated nonstop airport shuttle. Verify the current route and schedule before relying on it with luggage.
Inside the central district, walking plus CAT's free Downtown Transportation system can replace many short car trips. The DOT shuttle and Savannah Belles Ferry have different service patterns. Commercial trolleys are paid sightseeing products, even when their hop-on format also helps with movement.
When a car helps
A car is useful for Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski, Wormsloe and a self-guided Bonaventure visit. It is often a burden for a squares-only day once hotel or garage parking is counted. A common compromise is to stay downtown without a car, then rent one only for the coast or drive-out day. Confirm rental hours and overnight charges before assuming a one-day rental is cheaper.
Weather changes the order, not just the clothes
Heat, thunderstorms and wet brick can make a planned walking day slower. Keep one indoor attraction whose current opening day fits the trip, and avoid putting the longest outdoor route in the narrow gap before a timed tour. For Tybee, use the point forecast and Ocean Rescue flags rather than a Savannah city forecast alone.
Leave road buffer before a fixed evening booking
US-80 is the main route between Savannah and Tybee. A beach return and a nonrefundable downtown tour should not be scheduled back to back.
