Chippewa Square

Chippewa Square is at Bull and West Perry streets in the center of Savannah's Historic District. There is no gate and no ticket. Allow 15–25 minutes to find the monument and the filming side, then continue along Bull Street. Add time only if you stop at a shop or the theater on the square.

Where the Forrest Gump bench scene was filmed

Visit Savannah places the bus-bench scenes on the north side of the square, with the Oglethorpe monument visible behind Forrest. The bench was a prop the production brought in and took away. A replica is reported at the Savannah History Museum; exhibits change, so check with the museum if seeing the bench is the point of the stop.

What is actually in the square

The city says Chippewa Square was laid out in 1815 and named for a battle in the War of 1812. The monument to James Edward Oglethorpe stands at the center. The city also records a theater designed by William Jay on the square in 1820; the building has been altered. That is enough for a useful stop; whether it is the prettiest of the 22 squares is a matter of taste.

Fit Chippewa into the Bull Street line

From Wright Square, continue south on Bull Street to Chippewa. After the stop, keep going toward Madison and Monterey squares, then decide whether the group has the distance for Forsyth Park. This route lets the squares explain Savannah's street plan without collecting all 22 in one outing.

If you also want a museum, the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy sit west of the Bull Street line, while the Owens-Thomas House is farther east and runs on timed visits. Reserve that first, then fit the free square stops around it.

Self-guided stop or walking tour?

You do not need a guide to find the square or the filming side. A guided Historic District walk is worth the time when you want the stories behind the squares rather than a checklist of them.
